What image comes to your mind when you hear the word bazaar? A myriad of colours, their hues and tones? Neatly stacked goods and some chaotic displays? Low prices and an opportunity to haggle? I’d say bazaar is a little bit of all of the above. The word, that originated in Persia, has spread around the world and, even though the meaning has slightly migrated from the original – “marketplace” or a “network of merchants” – it hasn’t lost its charm. I must admit, anything that “hides” under this word holds my attention and I must be not the only one – this is already the second edition of Selina Lake’s Bazaar Style.

Bazaar Style or Decorating with Market and Vintage Finds is a very optimistic book that says – “anything goes”. There are no trends, there is no fashion and, most importantly, there are no rules you have to stick to. Your “hunting grounds” (flea markets, second-hand shop, garage sales, charity shops and even skips) always offer and element of surprise. The only thing you have to to be aware of is that you have to learn to think outside the box, which most often means – open your eyes wider and see the potential.

Bazaar Style is all about individuality and personality. It also has a very ethical edge to it, as creating your home this way, quite on many occasions, you will have to get your tools out and provide a second life… Don’t be scared, it’s not that difficult, just because: 1. you are allowed not to be too serious; and 2. Selina will offer you plenty of ideas how to do this.

Looking at colourful photographs and reading the brilliantly written “theory” part you will be guided step by step through the process of creating stunning, yet not necessarily expensive, interiors. You’ll learn more about the precious bazaar finds (furniture, textiles, lights etc.) and how to arrange them in the specific room. This is the book that will awaken your creativity and encourage you to experiment, which is always great fun!

P.S. Avoid this book if you like the minimalist movement of the 80s and the 90s. Make sure you buy this book if in the uneven fight of mass production versus Soul you support the latter.

Bazaar Style by Selina Lake is published by RPS at £14.99 and is available from Ryland Peters & Small.
