Any Minute Now…

April 25, 2013

Any minute now the trees will burst into bloom. It might happen tomorrow… or the day after tomorrow… This spring is definitely late, but I’m sure that sooner or later we will see white and pink petals scatter across the branches. Once again I will look at them in awe and decide that they have to be captured, preferably on canvas. I will also worry that my painting skills aren’t good enough and… reach for my camera (I know myself so well!).

There are quite a few famous paintings depicting blooming orchards or branches covered in blossoms, but if I had to choose just one, I’d go for Vincent van Gogh’s “Branches with Almond Blossoms”.

It looks a bit oriental (it’s attributed to Japonism*), but I absolutely love that blue background, that reminds me of the clear blue skies we get once the weather warms up, and the way the artist has painted the tree – looking at the branches you could say it’s almost a childish way to paint them, yet they form that perfect branch “system”. Well, what am I talking about? It’s Vincent van Gogh after all!

If you had to name one artwork that says it all and covers the subject of trees in bloom, what would it be?

*Japonism (from the French Japonisme, first used in 1872) is the influence of the arts of Japan on those of the West.
